Blinds
Exhibition in Gallery Johan S 2012
The window of the renaissance was shut by modernism. My paintings are figurative, but I have always been interested in flatness and frontality, in inverted windows where cast shadows from the spectator’s viewpoint turn the so-called window – the space of the picture, back towards the spectator.
In a city, we are surrounded by closed windows. We do not see into the buildings, instead we face blinds or store displays with advertising and anonymously blindly staring mannequins. What is behind them, behind the shut windows? We hurry past, as if we were passing an involuntary stage with an uncanny backdrop, maybe with the sense of being regarded.
